Along with the rest of the world, I watched the crushing moment when Olympic Gymnast Jordyn Weiber became aware that she wasn't going to make it to her dream of being an All-Around Gold Medalist. Everything she worked for, trained for, and dreamed of came crashing down at that moment, yet she was able somehow to pull it together. She rose up and found her own inner champion to help her move forward. Somehow Weiber was able to find respect for the bigger picture of what was happening and rather than collapsing in her moment of defeat, she was able to help pave the way for the USA Women's Gymnastics Team to win its first Team gold medal since 1996.
How do we see the bigger picture when we are devastated with stress and pain? After crushing disappointment, how do you keep your spirit alive? Many people find support in their surrounding community, but to really move past the energy of devastation, you must search deep within yourself and use that loss as a springboard for your determination and forward movement.
Pain has the power to make us feel frozen and misunderstood. In these times it's hard to keep the champion alive in your own behalf. Developing a compassionate relationship with yourself can help to ignite your spirit and inner strength. When the walls of your life fall down around you, you need to know that you can count on yourself to balance the hardship with the bigger picture of your life's journey.
Crippling events occur in life that can stop us in our tracks. Losing a spouse, a friend, illness, pain, loss of a job, facing betrayal; all of these experiences can create doubt and challenge our sense of balance or take away our faith. Sometimes the company of others is supportive, but isn't the solution. The answer lies in each one of us to find the strength in ourselves to keep going forward and promote healing from within.
